Last night the Mount Vernon Bulldog wrestling team went out and took care of business against Sehome. We wrestled really well in our first home dual of the season and doubled them up 54-27 being the final score of the meet. The Bulldog wrestlers were really wrestling well and finding ways to turn their opponents whenever those chances arrived. It was very encouraging to see the way they had improved since last time we wrestled Sehome. Sehome did have their best guy out but that wouldn't have changed the score significantly enough, besides he would have wrestled one of our best guys and so it would have been interesting to see the result.
152 - Adolph Rivas - Both wrestlers attempted takedowns and nearly got them but went out of bounds. Adolph got in on a deep double leg for the takedown late in the first period and rode him out. The second period Adolph started in the down position and hit a knee dip for the escape. The Sehome wrestler attempted a head and arm but Adolph countered and got the takedown. When the Sehome wrestler tried to stand up Adolph did a perfect lift and transitioned to a half on the way down. Adolph turned him and got the fall.
160 - Joe Barrington-Richards - Joe used a snap for a set up and hit a double leg for the takedown. Joe then forced a 3/4 nelson in and stacked his opponent in the first period for the fall.
171 - Cory Barrington-Richards - Cory tried a head and arm early but it got countered and Sehome got the takedown. Cory immediately switched and got the reversal. Sehome did a stand up for an escape. Sehome then tried a lateral drop, Cory countered and kept him on his back and got the fall.
189 - Derek Almanza - Derek shot in on a double leg as we were still congratulating Cory on his match telling us there was no time to celebrate yet, he transitioned immediately to a barb wire to turn him and then transitioned to a half nelson to keep him on his back and get the fall. Great wrestling and no time wasted by Derek it was really exciting. Especially since that put us up by 24 pretty much right off the bat.
215 - Ricky Rodriguez - Tough match for Ricky as he had one of their best wrestlers in a wrestler who qualified for state a few years back. Ricky is in such a tough weight class to be in the varsity lineup as there are not many inexperienced wrestlers at that weight. He fought hard but was taken down in a snap down and turned in a half nelson for a fall for Sehome.
285 - Chucky Bosquet - Chucky and his opponent got going and had a lot of pummeling in the first period. Neither wrestler scored but Chucky was close to slideby's and body locks 3 or 4 different times in the period. Second period Chucky started down. Chucky was working really hard to get up and did numerous knee dips to get to his feet but just couldn't quite get free from the hands. He then stood up and got rear tripped and held for 2 nearfall. Chucky got back to his base and stood up for an escape. Sehome then went for a head and arm as Chucky pummeled for a bodylock. Chucky missed the knee pummel as they were scrambling on their feet and got taken down to his back. Fall for Sehome with little time left in the round. Chucky was upset after the match but this was a match we were able to take some learning aspects from and move forward so though the loss hurt for him I think he will be a better wrestler late in the season because of it.
103 - Sehome accepted a FFT
112 - Frank Burge accepted a FFT from Sehome
119 - Pavel Okara accepted a FFT from Sehome
125 - Ricarda Garcia - Takedown on the edge by Sehome (I thought the points were a little premature), but Ricarda kept wrestling and got the escape immediately, She fought off numerous more attacks that period by Sehome but didn't give up anything else including another one where he got behind her but she kept scrambling and wrestling and didn't give anything up. Second period Ricarda started on top, Sehome stood up and got an escape. Ricarda got in on a shot but he countered and got the takedown. Ricarda then did a sit out and heist for an escape. Third period Ricarda started down. She was down by 3 at this point. She was ridden for about a minute but hit a knee dip for a standup and got the escape with about a minute to go in the match. Now down by two. She got in on a couple of attempts but was unable to finish any of them and was in on another as the buzzer sounded but not enough time to finish. Final score 3-5 Sehome. Ricarda really wrestled the way we want our wrestlers to wrestle in that she never relenquished any points and wrestled hard for all six minutes. Though the result wasn't what we desired she did wrestle the way we want.
130 - Jacob Morales - Jacob was finally eligible to wrestle this week and he was really excited to get going again. Sehome got the takedown on a snapdown but Jacob hit a switch for the reversal. He then put in a full nelson giving Sehome a penalty point. A scramble resulted in Jacob getting 3 nearfall but he grabbed the headgear to keep him on his back and gave up another penalty point. They restarted and Jacob put in another full nelson giving up 2 points this time. Another penalty would disqualify him so we were a little concerned at this point. A scramble resulted in Jacob getting a head and arm for a takedown and nearfall at the buzzer. Second period Jacob was down and got into a scramble, this scramble resulted in Jacob getting a reversal and the fall.
135 - Hunter Garcia - This was Hunter's first varsity match and he was matched up with one of Sehome's best wrestlers. This made things a little bit tough, but we really liked the effort that was put forth by Hunter in this match. He was taken down on an ankle pick that resulted in a head and arm, Hunter fought it off and got the head and arm into an illegal position for a penalty point and to get him off his back. On the fresh start Hunter did a knee dip to get to his feet but he hung on too long as he was being returned to the mat and gave Sehome nearfall and then they transitioned to a half which resulted in a fall for Sehome.
140 - Jordan Watts - Jordan got a quick body lock for the takedown. They went out of bounds and on the restart Jordan got an Anderson bar deep on the whistle and turned him for the fall.
145 - Aaron O'Neill accepted a FFT from Sehome.
Final score again was Mount Vernon 54 - Sehome 27. It was one of the quickest duals I have ever been a part of with only 1 match going the distance and we were done before 8pm. We were really pleased with how things went from a coaching stand point as the wrestlers wrestled hard and took care of business.
Come see us again this weekend in the Paul Reiman Tournament at Mount Vernon High School. Wrestling starts at 10 am. If you can help and haven't gotten ahold of Angela Rivas or Ginna Sloan please get ahold of them or me to help in anyway you can.
It's a great day to be a Bulldog!
